AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL OBSERVER GROUP FOR RHODESIAN ELECTIONS

Mr I.R. Viner, Μ.Ρ» today announced the composition of the Australian national observer group to observe the forthcoming elections in Southern Rhodesia. Mr Viner said the group would be led by Mr Neil Brown (M.P. for Diamond ... Valley). The other members would be Mr R, Katter (M.P. for Kennedy) Senator E.A. Robertson (Senator for the Northern

Territory) Dr N t '. Blewett (M.P. for Bonython) Mr K. Pearson, Chief Australian Electoral Officer, Mr A.T o Griffith of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Mr D.W. Evans of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Dr= G. Snider, of the Australian Electoral Office. .

Mr Viner recalled that the Government had decided that, as provided for in the Lusaka Agreement,. Australia would provide an eight man election observer group. He said the group would determine whether, in its considered

opinion, the forthcoming elections in Southern Rhodesia were conducted in a manner which was free and fair to all the participating parties. The group would present a report of its findings to the Australian Government and

Parliament after its return from Southern Rhodesia. The group is expected to depart for Rhodesia about 9 February and will be.away for several weeks.

Mr Viner recalled that Australia had also provided a member, Mr K.C.O. Shann, C.B.Eo for the joint Commonwealth group which was also observing the forthcoming elections. Mr Viner said it was expected that some other countries would

also provide national observer groups =
