Statement by the Minister for Productivity, Mr Ian Macphee

A new corporate symbol design has been approved for the Department of Productivity and is now being applied, the Minister for Productivity Mr Ian Macphee, announced today.

The symbol - a stylised graph showing a rising white curve against a blue background - visualises the Department's main objective:to encourage and bring about higher productivity in all sectors of Australian industry and commerce.

Mr Macphee said: "National productivity improvement is essentially a long-term goal, but worthwhile gains have already been achieved during the Department's first two years, in local industries like footwear, textiles, clothing, tyres and tanning. Many other . programs and projects, directed at productivity improvement, are . progressing satisfactorily.

"In many cases the key to productivity success has been - and is - the "tripartite" approach which the Department applies to helping our own industries. This is a three-way process involving close co-operation, trust and hard work between the representatives of Governments, management and trade unions.

"They all have a common interest in productivity. It is the best means of building a bigger national cake to meet the aspirations of the whole community.

"In a Department as diversified and widespread as Productivity, a common visual symbol is most desirable. The symbol will also assist the public in identifying the Department's publications and activities."
