The ninth meeting of the Australian Fisheries Council

was held on Friday, 2 November, at Lindeman Island, near Mackay

in Queensland. . t

The Australian Fisheries Council comprises the .

Commonwealth and State Ministers with responsibilities for

fisheries matters. It provides a basis for continuous consulta­

tion amongst the Commonwealth and State Governments on fisheries

matters, and meets formally about once a year.

The Chairman of the Council is the Commonwealth Minister

for Primary Industry, Mr Peter Nixon. The other members are:

The Commonwealth Minister for Science and the Environment,

Senator the Hon. J.J. Webster; the New South Wales Minister

for Conservation and Water Resources, Mr A.R.L. (Lin) Gordon;

the Victorian Minister for Conservation, Mr Vasey Houghton;

the Queensland Minister for Maritime Services and Tourism,

Mr Max Hooper; the Western Australian Minister for Fisheries - ·

and Wildlife, Mr Ray O'Connor; the South Australian Minister

for Fisheries, Mr W. Allan Rodda; the Tasmanian Minister for

Primary Industry, Dr Julian Amos; and, the Northern Territory

Minister for Industrial Development, Mr Roger Steele. (Mr O'Connor

was not able to attend the meeting).

During its meeting the Council considered more than

20 items relating to fisheries throughout Australia (see

accompanying releases).

The AFC meeting was preceded by -a three-day meeting

of the Standing Committee on Fisheries (SCF) on 29-31 October.

The Standing Committee has been established under the Australian

Fisheries Council to ensure further co-operation between

governments and ±he fishing industry, and advises the Australian

Fisheries Council. It is comprised of the senior fisheries

officers of Commonwealth and State fisheries authorities, and

related departments and authorities. _ .

The Chairman of the SCF for its latest meeting was

the Director of the Western Australian Department of Fisheries

and Wildlife, Mr B.K. Bowen. Other members are: Mr E.A. Purnell-Wei

First Assistant Secretary of the Fisheries Division, Commonwealth

Department of Primary Industry; Dr G. Murphy (representing

Mr D.J. Rochford, Chief) CSIRO Division of Fisheries and

Oceanography; Mr T.J. Leahy, Chief Finance Officer, ’Commonwealth

Department of Finance; Dr D.D..Francois, Director of the

New South Wales State Fisheries; Mr J.C.F. Wharton, Director of

the Fisheries and Wildlife Division, Victorian Ministry of

Conservation; Mr N.M. Haysom, Director, Queensland Fisheries

Service; Mr I.R. Kirkegaard, Acting Secretary, South Australian

Department of Fisheries; Mr R.T. MacKay, Chairman, Tasmanian

Fisheries Development Authority; and, Mr J.F. Dillon, Deputy

Secretary, Northern ‘ “ Territory Department of Primary Production.
