CHICKEN MEAT RESEARCH PROGRAM 1979/80

The Minister for Primary Industry, Mr Ian Sinclair, announced

today an allocation of $405,940 from the Chicken Meat Research

Trust Account in 1979/80 for a program of research relating to

the chicken meat industry recommended by the Australian Chicken

Meat Research Committee.

Funds for this research are raised by means of a levy on meat

chicken hatchings with a matching $1 for $1 contribution from

the Commonwealth Government.

The research will be carried out in all States by Universities,

State Departments of Agriculture, the CSIRO and other research

organisations.

The research program will include investigations into the

microbiological quality of processed chickens, protein requirements

of breeding stock, viral infections of chickens, pathogen-free

poultry and carcase composition.

Mr Sinclair referred in particular to successful research done

on Newcastle Disease (N.D.). Work by Dr P.B. Spradrow at the

University of Queensland supplemented by the testing of the

efficacy of an Australian vaccine against exotic strains of

N.D. at the University of Malaysia has resulted in the

availability of a new vaccine for this disease in Australia.
