M ED IA RELEASE

RESUMPTION OF OYSTER EXPORTS

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR PRIMARY INDUSTRY THE RT. HON. IAN SINCLAIR M > .

CANBERRA

14 March 1979.

The Minister for Primary Industry, Mr Ian Sinclair, today

announced that the prohibition on the export of oysters had now

been lifted. "

The Minister said that the decision to allow.the resumption of oyster

. exports followed consultation with State authorities and the oyster

industry and the development of a Code of Practice for the

. processing and handling of oysters for domestic and export markets.

New requirements for the registration of export establishments

'processing oysters include the need for purification plants to be

installed. Already a number of export establishments containing

purification plants have applied for registration.

The Department of Primary Industry in consultation with State

authorities will, amongst other measures, maintain a regular

microbiological surveillance of oysters as an indicator of the .

efficiency of the new purification plants.

Mr Sinclair said that certification of oysters based on the new

procedures was now acceptable to authorities in countries which

constituted Australia's major overseas markets. He hoped that

export sales would recommence immediately.

"For confirmed oyster eaters the news that the export prohibition

has been lifted only supports the long held judgement that the

quality of Australian oysters is hard to beat internationally,"

Mr Sinclair said.

"This certainly means good news for oyster eaters abroad as well as

providing very necessary relief for Australia's oyster farmers."
