The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrew Peacock, announced today the appointment of the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, . Mr Charles Mott, as Australian Special Representative and Head of the Australian Liaison Office to be established in Salisbury for the. ■ duration of the transitional period during which elections will be . held in Rhodesia. Mr Peacock said that during this period Mr Mott,

would retain his position as High Commissioner to Nigeria and that the Australian Mission in Lagos would temporarily be headed by an Acting High Commissioner.' He expected that the Liaison Office would, be needed in Sclisbury 'for approximately three months. ■

Mr Peacock recalled that he had announced in Parliament on ' 22 November the Government's intention to establish a small Liaison Office ,and that subject to all-party agreement at the.talks now concluding in· London, it. was expected that- the office would commence

functioning within the next week or so. Mr Peacock said that the Liaison Office would be able to assist both the Australian contingent for the ceasefire monitoring force and the Australian election observer team. .
