AMBASSADOR TO CHINA

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrew Peacock, today announced the appointment of Mr Hugh Dunn as Australis 1s Ambassador to the People's Republic of China.

Mr Dunn, 56, will succeed Mr C.G. Woodard who has been Ambassador to Peking since 1976.

Mr Peacock said that Australia and China established diplomatic relations on 22 December' . 972 and since then a relationship of considerable importance tr both countries had developed. Significant links in the fields of trade,

culture, education, science and commerce had been established, China was now one of Australia's major export markets.

Mr Dunn is Australia's High Commissioner to Kenya and Uganda and Ambassador to Ethiopia. From 1973 to 1976 he was Ambassador to Argentina and Ambassador to Taiwan from 1969 to 1972. He has also served in Saigon, Washington and

Tokyo.

Mr Dunn, Queensland's Rhodes Scholar in 1948, was educated at the University of Queensland and the University of Oxford. .
