HIGH COMMISSIONER TO SOLOMON ISLANDS

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrew Peacock, today announced the appointment of Mr R.G. Irwin as Australia's High Commissioner to the Solomon Islands, He will succeed Mr A.J. Melhuish, who has been Head of the Australian Mission

in Honiara for the past two years,

Mr Peacock said that Australia had a longstanding and close relationship with the Solomon Islands and had been the first country to establish resident diplomatic representation in Honiara, The two countries also had close and growing links through their: membership in the Commonwealth and the South Pacific Forum..

Mr Irwin, 38, a graduate in Economics from the University of Queensland, served in the Australian Treasury and the Reserve Bank before joining the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1969. He has served in New Delhi and Ankara and^

from 1974 to 1977 he was seconded as Deputy Director to the South Pacific Bureau for Economic Cooperation (SPEC) in Suva, Fiji.

Mr Irwin is married with two children.
