GOVERNMENT FOLLOW-UP OF CONFERENCE DECISIONS

The Minister for Employment and Youth Affairs, Mr Ian Viner said today he would meet with delegates from the National Youth Conference in six months time to discuss the Government's follow-up of Conference decisions.

Speaking during the closing session of the Conference, .. Mr Viner accepted a Conference resolution that 12 of the 120 delegates return to Canberra in six months

to consider the Government's response to Conference decisions.

Mr Viner said he would meet the group of 12 delegates together with the National Youth Advisory Group.

The Minister listed the specific follow-up action to the National Youth Conference which the Government will take:

. a full account of the conference will be published as soon as possible. An information kit will be produced and distributed to all delegates.

. all Conference decisions, resolutions, statements and other expressions of view will be referred to the Standing Task Group on Youth Affairs which comprises representatives of seven Federal'departments. The Standing Task Group on Youth Affairs comprises the Departments of Employment and Youth Affairs, Prime Minister and Cabinet, Finance, Social Security,

Education, Health, and Industry and Commerce.

. every Federal Minister has been asked to respond to Conference resolutions and other outcomes affecting their area within the six months time limit.

. the responses from Ministers and Departments will be published by the Government.

. Conference outcomes will also be studied by the National Youth Advisory Group and the Office of Youth Affairs who will recommend further action to the Minister. They will advise on means of follow-up with youth through

such avenues as seminars, forums t regional conference3 or another National Conference.. - .

Mr Viner told delegates he believed the first National . Youth Conference had fulfilled its three major objectives:

1. A national forum for youth had been provided. 2. Youth representatives had expressed their views. 3. The channels for communication between youth and Government had now been opened.
