QUESTACON : SCIENCE CENTRE FOR CANBERRA

A new educational facility for Canberra students will open

next year when a science centre called the Questacon will

be established in the Ainslie Infants School.

The centre will house scientific working models which

students will operate to demonstrate various scientific

principles. It will also house static displays and models.

The Minister for Education, Senator Garrick, said today

that the project was an excellent Example of cooperation

between educational authorities, scientific organisations

and private enterprise. . .

He said that the Questacon had been launched earlier this

year following a Schools Commission grant to Dr Michael

Gore of the Physics Department of the ANU. The Schools

Authority, in providing the space to house the centre,

was making creative use of surplus school space. Many

of Canberra's scientific and technological institutions,

such as ANU, CCAE, RMC Duntroon, CSIRO, the TAPE Colleges,

Bureau of Mineral Resources, were currently preparing

exhibits. Business firms in turn had helped by providing

materials, equipment and specialised information. ■

Senator Carrick said that the project would be a worthwhile

educational innovation in Canberra. He hoped that

individuals with appropriate scientific background might

come forward to help Questacon operate effectively.
