The Minister'for the Capital Territory, Mr Bob Ellicott, said today

that a scheme was about to be implemented, which would provide \ ·

employment for a number of young people. '

The scheme, which will be known as the A.C.T. Youth Employment Scheme

is based on a similar arrangement introduced in Sydney on the initiative

of Mr David Connolly MP. The Canberra version was initiated by a

Committee Chaired by Mr John Haslem, MP, on which various local

organisations were represented. .

The Y.M.C.A. has agreed to act as employer of the group of young people

and 'Mr Ian (Mick) Rippon will be the Y.M.C.A.'s Co-ordinator for the {

project. The Rotary Club of Canberra South and the Lions Clubs of

Canberra have agreed to make available sums of $500 and $1,000

respectively to purchase equipment and supplement wages in the early .

stages. Commonwealth Motors Pty Ltd has made a vehicle available on

loan.

Mr Ellicott said that the Y.M.C.A. would employ a very small group at

the outset, who would undertake jobs such as lawn mowing, gardening

and window cleaning at a reasonable hourly rate. He hoped the response

from the community would be such that the group could be enlarged

progressively. .y Λ

Members of the community who have odd jobs to be done and wish to take

advantage of the service should telephone 4855Q2.
