Members of approved pistol clubs in Canberra will pay less for

their pistol licences from today (15 February).

The Minister for the Capital Territory, Mr Bob Ellicott , haa

announced amendments to the Gun Licence Ordinance· 1937 which will

■ cut the cost of a pistol licence. Mr Ellicott said last September

that he would take this action, after representations from Senator -

John Knight, Members of the ACT Legislative Assembly and officials

of pistol clubs... Gun and pistol licence fees had been increased

from 50 cents to $1 5 - 0 0 in May 1978. , ■

Under the amending legislation, pistol clubs will be able to apply

to the Registrar of Gun Licences for approval. A member of an

approved club will then pay a licence or licence renewal fee of

$5-00 for the first pistol and $1.00 for each other pistol·owned by

the member.

The amendments bring security firms into line with banks. Until now,

a security company was required to license a pistol and then license

each employee in respect of the pistol when it was carried in the

course of the employee's duties.

Licence fees for guns, pistols and gun dealers will otherwise remain

at the levels set in May last year.
