Army's fire fighting capability to get boost

The Minister for Defence Mr D.J. Killen, today

announced art extensive programme for the purchase and development

of fire tenders capable of being used within the Army for

bushfires, building fires and airfield fires.

The approved programme will extend over the next

four years. The programme includes:

, 16 medium, general purpose fire trucks, are being

built by Alexander Perrie Pty Ltd, of Rockdale, NSW,

on International Harvester AGCO 1710B chassis. The

first units are scheduled to be delivered in

December and the order completed by August, 1980.

The estimated cost is $lm. i >

φ 52 rural fire tenders (including two for the RAN)

are being built by Gilbarco Australia Ltd, Airport

West, Melbourne on Mercedes Benz LA 911B chassis.

The first units are scheduled to be delivered in

December, 1979. The estimated cost is $3m.

Procurement of an additional 21 vehicles is planned

in the future.

t 10 early rescue tenders (used in recovery Operations

for crashed aircraft), which have been developed by

the Department of Defence Engineering Development

Establishment, Maribyrnong, Vic., are to be

constructed by the Ordnance Factory, Maribyrnong.

The early rescue tenders will be constructed on an

International Harvester AGCO A510 chassis. The

first units are scheduled to be delivered in

January, 1981 and the order completed by March,

1982. The estimated cost is $300,000.

Future planning includes procurement of 18 light,

general purpose fire trucks. This vehicle has also been

developed by the Defence Engineering Design Agency on an

International Harvester ACC0 A510 chassis.

The procurement of these vehicles will complete

the re-equipment of Army fire vehicles* which began in 1977

with the purchase of the Oshkosh airfield fire fighting truck.
