Trust fund for reserve forces

The Minister for Defence, Mr D.J. Killen, today

announced the establishment of a trust fund to further the

work of the Committee for Employer Support of Reserve Forces

(CESRF). f

Mr Killen said the work of CESRF was to obtain

the willing co-operation of employers in supporting their

employees who volunteered to serve in the Defence Force


Employers were being asked to allow time off for

training and fo protect the job opportunities of the


Mr Killen said that following the use of a

television commercial, earlier this year, the CESRF

was approached by several leading companies '

expressing a desire to participate more fully in ‘

the campaign.

The Minister said he had approved the establishment

of a trust fund so that the funds collected could be

efficiently co-ordinated and administered. Sir Eric Willis,

a former premier of NSW, was chairman of trustees.

Other trustees were Sir Robert Norman, who

retired in 1977 as Chief General Manager of the Bank of

New South Wales, Lieutenant General Sir Mervyn Brogan, who

was Chief of the General Staff from 1971 to 1973 , and the

national chairman of CESRF and a past president of the Metal

Trades Industry Association, Mr Alan Edwards.

It was planned that a relatively small number of

significant companies in Australia would be invited to


A national community awareness campaign was a

major part of the CESRF activities. It involved press,

radio and television and was divided into three phases.

Mr Killen said his department had already funded

phase one and was funding phase three.

It was planned to finance phase two from the trust.

Phase two would be spearheaded by a series of television

advertisements featuring: Sir Frank Espie, Deputy Chairman

of CRA and Chairman of Bougainville Copper Ltd.: Mr Gordon

Jackson, General Manager of CSR Ltd.: Mr Kerry Packer,

Managing Director of Australian Consolidated Press: Sir

Samuel Burston, President of Australian Wool-Growers and

Graziers Council'; and Miss Ita Buttrose, Publisher,

Australian Women's Weekly.

It was expected that these commercials would be

released late in October.

Mr Killen said he regarded the establishment of

the trust as further evidence of the strong bonds which

bound the partnership between government and the private

sector in maintaining a well-trained Defence Force Reserve.
