JOINT ARMY/CIVILIAN QUEST FOR SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE

A team of 18 soldiers on an adventure training exercise

will lead a party of nine academics and scientists into the

Russell River region of North Queensland this month in an attempt

to further man's knowledge of a now extinct race - the

Rainforest Aborigines.

The expedition, (from July 6 to 19) will be

into inhospitable virgin jungle which, although only 20 kilometres

north of Innisfail, has deterred intrusion by white men for

more than 100 years. ·

The trek, which follows a path first taken in 1876 by

an Australian explorer . . Christy Palmerston, is . expected to ' - ; · * * ' ‘

provide scientists with a unique opportunity to study untouched

Aboriginal sites and attempt to identify rare animal and .

birdlife species. . . ■
