New commodore appointed president Australian Ordnance Council

The Director of Naval Ordnance Inspection,

Captain J.N. Crosthwaite, was promoted today to the

rank of Commodore and appointed President Australian

Ordnance Council. He replaces Air Commodore N.R. Carr,

who retires shortly.

. Commodore Crosthwaite, formerly of Melbourne

but now a resident of Canberra, joined the RAN in 1942 as

a cadet midshipman and after initial training served in a

number of Royal Navy battleships immediately after the end of World

War II. During the Korean War he served aboard HMAS

Warramunga and wa!s present at the American landing at Inchon.

He has had a close association with the Ikara

project, and was trials safety officer for all the research

and development firings of the Ikara weapon system.

Commodore Crosthwaite also has been closely

involved with the design, trials, manufacture and in-service

aspects of weapons and munitions. \ .
