AUSTRALIAN ARMY SURVEY OPERATION IN FIJI

The Minister for Defence, Mr D.J. Killen, announced

today that an Australian Army survey team would conduct a

10-week field operation in Fiji beginning on April 16, 1979.

The operation would be carried out in response to

a Fiji Government request for assistance in determining base

points for Fiji's proposed 200 nautical mile Exclusive

Economic Zone. It would involve aerial photography and

satellite observations which use sophisticated position-fixing

equipment at 16 remote locations in the Fijian islands.

Mr Killen said the survey team would comprise nine

soldiers . from the Royal Australian Army Survey Corps and

the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

The Royal Fiji■Military Forces would support the team during

the operation. A civilian surveyor from the New Zealand

Department of Lands and Survey also would be attached to the

team for a three-week period.

The survey operation would be undertaken as part of .

the Australian Defence Co-operation Program in the south­

west Pacific area.
