WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14. 1979. NO. 27/79


It has been decided by the Chief of Personnel,

Major General D.S. Baldwin, not to convene a General Court

Martial to try the officer who was recently charged with

having unlawfully communicated information relating to a

Defence work to the Defence and Aviation Correspondent of the

"Canberra Times".

Because the officer concerned is a Major, the only

permissible course of formal disciplinary action would have

been trial by General Court Martial.

The convening of a General Court Martial is

regarded as a very serious step.

It was considered that the circumstances of this

particular case did not warrant this course of action being
