CONSUMER PROTECTION PAMPHLET 79/136

A new consumer pamphlet aimed at providing people with a general guide to the protection offered.by the Trade Practices Act has been produced by the Department of Business and Consumer Affairs. '

In announcing this today, the Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs, Mr Ual. Fife, said the pamphlet had been developed following amendments to the Act introduced last year.

"The pamphlet ’Buying Goods and Services' has been designed -to help consumers appreciate the backing that the Trade Practices Act gives them when purchasing goods and services," Mr Fife said.

"It also, provides advice on buying practices for consumers to follow so they can minimise problems and safeguard their rights."

Mr Fife said that the pamphlet would be a valuable: complement to the important work undertaken by the Trade Practices Commission and by State and Territory agencies in educating the community on consumer protection matters.

Mr Fife paid tribute to the National Consumer Affairs Advisory Council for the part it had played in developing the pamphlet.

He said that the pamphlet would be widely distributed by his Department.
