DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS AND CONSUMER AFFAIRS

GOVERNMENT DECISION: IAC REPORT ON WORK TRUCKS, CERTAIN 79/40 MOBILE MACHINES, ETC. .

The Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs, Mr Ual. Fife, and the Minister for Industry and Commerce, Mr Phillip Lynch, today announced the Government's decision on the Industries Assistance Commission's report on work trucks and certain mobile machines.

The Ministers said that, with one minor exception, the Govern ment had accepted the Commission's recommendation that long term assistance to the goods under reference should remain unchanged. This assistance consisted of duties mostly in the range 20-30 per cent,

though a feu items fell above or belou this range.

The exception related to straddle carriers and parts, uhich had been dutiable at 17 or 19 per cent dependent on size, and uhich it had been decided to round up to a uniform duty of 20 per cent.

In respect of internal combustion pouered fork lift trucks uith a lifting capacity of betueen 1500 and 4000 kilograms, uhich are currently dutiable at 30 per cent plus a temporary duty of $2500 per vehicle, the Government had accepted the IAC recommendation that these

be dutiable at 30 per cent plus $ 1500 per vehicle from implementation uith the specific duty being reduced to $750 12 months after implement-, ation and eliminated from 1 January, 1981.

In reaching its decision the Government noted the Commission's comment that the community's general interest uould not be served by provision of high assistance to this industry in the long term, but agreed uith the Commission's vieu that the industry should be given

the opportunity to demonstrate uhether it can improve its competitive position and operate uith a reasonable level of assistance.

Copies of the Commission's report uill be available in the near future from the Australian Government Publishing Service retail book shops in each of the capital cities.
