INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OP AUSTRALIA,

THE RT. HON. -MALCOLM FRASER, C.M., M.P. ■

ON MONDAY,. 13 FEBRUARY 1978

Your Excellency, Your Excellencies, ladies and

gentlemen. As you know, there was a bomb explosion

in front of this hotel in the early hours of this .

morning. Two people were killed and a number of others

injured, one critically. All of us.will deplore that act

and I am sure that all of you would want to join with me

today in extending our deepest sympathy to the families

bereaved by that senseless act of violence. Our best

wishes go for a full recovery to those who were injured.

Before yesterday’s violence this hotel was subject

to the tightest security arrangements yet implemented in

Australia and there has been the fullest co-operation

between federal and state officers, but as a result of

last night's action there has been a review of those

arrangements. No assumptions have been untested.

Additional measures are being applied and security is

being tightened much further than we earlier believed

necessary in Australia. If there is inconvenience to

anyone, I regret it, but I know that everyone will

understand. '

I much appreciate the immediate response last night

of the Premier, Mr. Wran, who personally visited the

hotel to join with me in assessing the incident, and he

has been here again this morning. - The resources of the

State and the Commonwealth will not be spared in seeking

to uncover the perpetrators of the crime.

This sort of violence is not part of our tradition

and the government and people of Australia will not

tolerate it.

Sir, I have great pleasure in asking you formally

to welcome our guests to Australia.
