PRIMARY INDUSTRY MEDIA RELEASE

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR PRIMARY INDUSTRY THE RT. HON. IAN SINCLAIR M

CANBERRA

23 November 1978.

SPECIAL RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM 1978/79

The Minister for Primary Industry, Mr Ian Sinclair, announced

today that he had approved expenditure of $225,000 from the

1978/79 Commonwealth Special Research Grant (CSRG) for 22 rural

industry research projects„

The Grant provides Commonwealth funds, normally on a dollar for

dollar matching basis, for research in rural industries not

covered by specific statutory or other funding arrangements.

Research proposals related to the development of new or infant

rural industries as well as those of a multi-industry nature are

also eligible for grant assistance.

Mr Sinclair said that applications were of a high standard and

competition for the limited funds available was intense.

Projects to be funded this year included investigations of the

benefits of on-farm cooling of avocados, methods for improving the

, quality of grapefruit juice, assistance for cereal rye, peanut,

^ rice and canning peach variety improvement programs.

Research would also be conducted into development of short season

machine harvestable pigeon peas suitable for Australian conditions

and investigations into the nutrition and management of pigeons

for meat (squab) production.

Mr Sinclair said that he expected applications for support from

the 1979/80 CSRG to be called publicly early in 1979. Allocations

for that year would be conditional upon the availability of funds.
