STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER FOR PRIMARY INDUSTRY THE RT. HON. IAN SINCLAIR M.P.

HONEY RESEARCH 1978/79

The Minister for Primary Industry, Mr. Ian Sinclair, today

announced that he had approved expenditure totalling $11,850

for research to benefit the beekeeping and honey industries.

The Australian Honey Board on behalf of the industry has

increased its annual contribution from $5,000 to $6,500; the

Commonwealth Government will also increase its contribution.

The Honey Research Advisory Committee which recommended the

program regards research into European Brood Disease as having

the highest priority.

The presence of this disease in southern Australia is causing

significant losses to beekeepers, particularly as control

measures can involve destruction of hives.

The Minister said that Well over one-third of the expenditure

approved for honey research in 1978/79 would be devoted to

studies by the Waite Agricultural Research Institute in South

Australia into the transmissibility of European Brood Disease. .

In 1978/79, support will also commence for work by the Queensland

Agricultural College directed towards selecting the most

suitable strains of bees for specific environments.

Mr. Sinclair said projects would still continue on research

into pollination of crops, Nosema disease and the development

of repellents to reduce pesticide hazards to honey bees.
