DRIED FRUITS RESEARCH 1978/79

The Minister for Primary Industry, Mr. Ian Sinclair, announced

today that approval had been given for the expenditure of $80,550

in 1978/79 for research in the dried fruits industry.

To enable one of the projects to commence a season earlier, an

approval has been given for additional expenditure of $2,600 in

1977/78.

Funds to finance the research are provided by way of a levy on

all dried vine and dried tree fruits delivered to packing houses.

The Commonwealth Government provides dollar-for-dollar matching

grants on expenditure from the Research Account in accordance with

the provisions of the Dried Fruits Research Act 1971.

During 1978/79 research will be undertaken on behaif of the

Committee by CSIRO, and the State Departments of Agriculture in

New South Wales and Victoria. New research projects approved are:

. Testing of the shelf life of dried vine fruit.

. Development of new drying varieties by hybridization.

. Evaluation of cultural practices and rootstocks for Carina

grape vines.

. Insect pest control for drying grapes.

. Rootstocks, spacing and trellising for gordos in a nematode

infested replant situation.

. Mechanical hedging of prunes and plums.

. Provision of leaf area meter for foliar absorption studies.
