The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrew Peacock, announced today that the Commonwealth Group of Industrial ■ Experts will meet in Canberra this week.

The meeting, from 2 to 8 May, will be· officially opened at the Lakeside Hotel tomorrow by Mr N. Currie, the Secretary of the Department of Industry and Commerce.

The ten-man Group is made up of eminent academics, businessmen and officials from a wide range of Commonwealth countries.

The meeting, hosted by Australia, is expected to finalise proposals designed to improve industrial co-operation between Commonwealth countries.

The decision to form the Commonwealth Group of Industrial Experts resulted from the Commonwealth Senior Officials Meeting held in Canberra in'May 1976. The Expert Group held its first meeting in London in January 1977 and

subsequently met in Kashmir, London and Singapore.

The report of the Canberra meeting will be considered by a Commonwealth Finance Ministers' Meeting in September.

The Chairman of the Expert Group is the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Mr L. Jha, The Permanent Head of the South Australian Department of Economic Development, Mr RoDo Bakewell, is a member of the Group.

Mr Peacock said that the hosting of this meeting accords with the importance Australia attached to its relations with the Commonwealth and in particular to its efforts to promote the economic development of its member countries.
