CANBERRA A CT.

SPECIAL STUDIES IN ABORIGINAL EDUCATION

4 September 19

The Commonwealth Government is to provide funds for special

investigations of some aspects of Aboriginal education this financial year. *

The Minister for Education, Senator J.L. Garrick, said today

the special studies would deal particularly with the training of teachers and teacher assistants for Aboriginal children and adults. '

Senator Carrick said the Government did not believe a large-scale

inquiry in Aboriginal education would be appropriate at the present time.. ' ' .

Senator Carrick said that despite the severe budgetary restrictions

imposed by the overall financial situation the Government felt that

the proposed special studies were of such importance that about $60,000 would be reallocated from other areas within the education portfolio to fund them. ' ·

'The special studies would be conducted under the auspices of the National Aboriginal Education Committee (NAEC), a body which :

included only Aboriginals and which was established in 1976 to

advise the Government on all aspects of Aboriginal education.

The NAEC had prepared a draft statement of its aims and objectives

earlier this year.

The draft statement had included a proposal for a national inquiry

into Aboriginal education. ' .

The draft statement had been prepared for distribution widely to .

Aboriginal communities and organisations, government and non- 1

government education authorities and other bodies and individuals

with a special interest in Aboriginal education for comment. · ·

there in the National Conference of Teachers of Aboriginal · children. · The Conference was being jointly sponsored by the . *

NAEC and the Northern Territory Division of the Commonwealth Department of Education. .

forward specific proposals for the projects to be funded this .

.year. .
