CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL COMMISSION. FOR Unesco

The Minister for Education, Senator J L Garrick, today announced the appointment of Mr L G Wilson as Chairman of the Australian National Commission for Unesco. Mr Wilson replaces Professor R 0 Slatyer as Chairman. Professor Slatyer has

resigned from the position prior to taking up his appointment as Ambassador to Unesco in September.

Mr Wilson is the Secretary of the CSIRO, and has had a long-standing association with Unesco and the National Commission. Most recently, Mr Wilson has been the Chairman of the Australian Unesco Committee for Communication. Mr Wilson has a particular interest in Unesco1s programs in the area of

libraries and documentation and information systems. He was a member of the Australian Delegation to the Unesco General Conference held in Nairobi in 1976.

Mr Wilson also has had experience at the.international level through his involvement with bodies such as the Commonwealth Scientific Committee and the Council of the International Federation for Documentation..

In announcing Mr Wilson's appointment, Senator Garrick paid tribute to Professor Slatyer1s contribution to the activities of the Australian National Commission for Unesco.
