NAVAL OFFICER PROMOTED TO REAR ADMIRAL

The promotion of a senior naval officer to

rear admiral Was announced today by the Minister for

Defence, Mr D.J. Killen.

Commodore G.A. Bennett, the present General

Manager of the Williams town Naval Dockyard in Melbourne,

will be promoted to rear admiral on February 12 next year

to take over the post of Chief of Naval Technical Services

at Navy Office, Department of Defence, Canberra.

M.P. Reed, who retires after 43 years service.

Commodore Bennett has been General Manager of

the Williairistown Naval Dockyard since November, 1975.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Commodore George Angus Bennett graduated from the

Royal Australian Naval College iri 1943. He specialised

in ordnance engineering. He served in the heavy cruiser,

HMAS Australia, and later completed advanced engineering

and ordnance engineering courses in the United Kingdom.

Mr Killen said that Commodore Bennett would

take over the Naval Technical Services post from Rear Admiral

He then served as an engineer officer in the aircraft

carrier, HMAS Vengeance, and the destroyers, HMAS

Queensborough and HMAS Vampire. From 1956 to 1958 he

was Deputy Director of Naval Construction, and from

1966 to 1967 was Naval Assistant to the Third Naval

Member. Other posts included Superintendent, Re-Fit

Planning, at Garden Island, Sydney; Assistant Chief

of Naval Technical Services, Navy Office, Canberra;

Director of Forward Design, Navy Office, Canberra;

Naval Technical Representative in the United Kingdom,

arid Director of Naval Dockyards. He was promoted to the

rank of commodore in October 1975· .
