Australian submarine to visit Denmark

. HMAS Otama, the Royal Australian Navy's newest

submarine, will become the first Australian warship to

visit Denmark since the end of the second World War.

The Minister for Defence, Mr D.J. Killen,

announced today that HMAS Otama would visit Copenhagen

from August 15-18.

HMAS Otama is the sixth and final Oberon class

submarine to be built for the Royal Australian Navy.

She was commissioned in the United Kingdom in April

this year, and has only just completed her work up

off the coast of Scotland.

Mr Killen said that after her visit to Copenhagen,

the 2070 tonne diesel-electrie submarine would make a

5-day visit to Den Helder, Holland, commencing on August

21. HMAS Otama would arrive in Australia shortly before

Christmas. ■; · ,

Five sister ships, HMA Ships Oxley, Otway, Ovens,

Onslow and Orion are already serving with the Australian

Fleet, based at HMAS Platypus in Sydney.
