RAAF TO DROP MAIL AT MACQUARIE ISLAND

The Minister for Science, Senator Webster,

(T and the Minister for Defence, Mr Killen, announced

. today that a special mail drop is scheduled to be made

by the RAAF tomorrow, June 21, to the 21

expeditioners on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island.

It will be the first mail the members of the

^ Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition will

. have received in five months. The next ship to call at

the island, 12S0 kilometres south-east of Hobart, is

not due until November. .

I The mail drop will have special significance :

x. . for the expeditioners because, weather permitting, it :

' will occur on midwinter's day, an event vigorously

■ celebrated by all Antarctic expeditioners as it marks

the time the sun starts to return from its. furthest

■ point north.

: The drop will be made by a RAAF Orion aircraft

on a training flight from Edinburgh in South Australia.

. The aircraft , from No. 11 Squadron, will take 12 hours. .

to make the return trip travelling via East Sale in

Victoria.

Fresh fruit, vegetables and mail will be ·

dropped in "storpedoes" - containers designed to be

airdropped by parachute. . ' . .

An inaugural mail drop to the island was made .

by the RAAF in September last year and was enthusiastically

received by expeditioners. .

Mail drops to Australia's three station's at . .__

Casey, Davis and Mawson on the Antarctic continent are

not possible because of the distances involved.
