DEFENCE COMPUTER PURCHASE

The Department of Defence is to buy a

refurbished Honeywell H8200 computer and associated

equipment at a cost of $2.2 million from Honeywell Pty.

- Ltd., the Minister for Defence, Mr D.J. Killen, said

today.

Many of the Department1s large administrative

systems were running on Honeywell computers which were

■ = bought in the period 1962 to 1969. These computers

would continue to perform this role for some time,

Mr Killen said.

The refurbished machine would readily

supplement these existing machines, while the systems

they serviced were gradually redeveloped to run on more,

modern equipment.

That redevelopment task was a particularly

large one since it included assimilating radical

changes in procedures following integration of the

formerly separate Service departments. It was being

handled by the existing staff of the Department's

Computing Services Division, in parallel with its

normal ongoing work, and was planned to be substantially

completed by 1981. * .
