WEDNESDAY. MARCH 1, 1978. . NO. 30/78

YACHT TOWED OFF REEF

A yacht, grounded and damaged on Corbett Reef

about 220 nautical miles north of Cairns, was towed to \

safety by the RAN patrol boat HMAS Barricade,

commanded by Lieutenant M. Petch^ yesterday afternoon.

Three members of the yacht's crew of seven were embarked

in HMAS Barricade for passage to Thursday Island.

The yacht, the Sri Ulu, was sighted by the

patrol boat late yesterday morning and shortly afterwards

fired a red distress flare. .

Barricade towed the Sri Ulu off the reef to

a safe anchorage in the Flinders Island group and gave

assistance to pump out the vessel and caulk planks

which had opened as a result of buffetting on the reef.

Two male and one female member of the crew

were taken aboard Barricade. Two other males and two

females remained aboard the yacht to effect repairs to

a damaged rudder. When the weather, which has been

affected by Cyclone Gwen, abates it is understood the Sri

Ulu will sail for Cairns. . .
