DEPARTMENT , . OF THE CAPITAL TERRITORY

STATEMENT - FOR PRESS a . 1

The Surveyors (Amendment) Ordinance 1978 became operative yesterday and increased fees under the Surveyors (Examination and Registration) Regulations were gazetted today, Friday 3 February 1978.

The purpose of the amendment to the Ordinance is to ensure that an appropriately qualified person may be available for appointment as Registrar to the Surveyors Board. The principal changes to the ReguĀ lations increase the_ fees for registration as a surveyor from. $20 to $50 and for annual registration from $5 to $20. Most fees for other services have been doubled to keep in step with current monetary values.

The increased fees were recommended to the Minister by the Surveyors Board to partially offset the costs of the J3oard's operations. These costs are presently a charge to the general pubhic expenditure to the extent of more than $12,000 a year. ,

There are at present about 200 registered surveyors in the ACT.

The proposed fees, while they fall considerably short of recovering total costs, are comparable with fees charged in the States and in New Zealand.
