NEWS RELEASE 78/11 BACA

OIL INDUSTRY CONFERENCE - 2ND SESSION

10 FEBRUARY, 1978.

The Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs Mr Wal Fife,

and the Minister for Industry and Commerce Mr Philip lynch today

announced that the second session of the Oil Industry Conference had

"been held in Canberra.

■ The Conference chaired by Mr Fife and convened by the

Government to examine the development of equitable distribution and

marketing policies in the petroleum market was attended by both

supplier and retailer interests. It commenced its consideration of

the reports of two sub-committees which had been appointed by the

first session of the conference to consider and report on leasing

arrangements between oil companies and lessees and on questions of

alleged discriminatory pricing practices. The conference also began

consideration of other agenda items dealing with rationalisation,

marketing arrangements and the position in the industry of particular

interests such as bulk agents and lubricating oil marketeers.

. Discussion papers on the various agenda items prepared by

conference participants were considered by the conference.

The Ministers expressed their desire that the discussion

of relevant issues by all interested parties in the content of the.

conference would enable the industry itself to solve the problems

being experienced in petroleum marketing.

The conference will meet again in Melbourne on 31 March 1978.
