Grants for S.A. rural roads announced

The Minister. for Administrative Services, John McLeay

k has announced Commonwealth grants totalling $15.7 million',

for South Australian rural, roads during 1978-79.

■Mr. McLeay said $8.046 million had been approved under

the Rural Arterial Roads Program, while $7.7 million had . . . .

been allowed for the Rural Local Roads Program.

The South "Australian Government would contribute more than

$1 million to both programs, Mr. McLeay said. . .

He said the Commonwealth's contribution to road programs.

represented a 7-5 per cent increase in each case over the ;

Major works to be undertaken under the Rural Arterial Roads

program included further construction of the Hawker to Marree • . - _ · * _ road, reconstruction of the Tailem Bend Road between Chan do s

and the Victorian border and reconstruction and duplication

of 3.8 km of the Lincoln Highway.

Also included are 43 projects to be undertaken primarily by

local councils at a cost of $3.5 million.

Mr. McLeay said that under, the Rural. Local Roads Program

$2.,77 million would be made available to councils and more ' / · ‘

than $5 million would be: spent by the Highways Department

on Rural Local Roads under its control.
