Media Release From the Office of John McLeay MINISTER FOR ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence

Immediate release 17 October 1979

The Minister for Administrative Services, the Hon. John McLeay

today announced the release of a directory of services provided by

the Commonwealth Government.

Mr McLeay said that the directory, titled Service Guide, which

had been compiled and published by the Australian Government Publishing

Service, a Branch of his Department, was a significant step in

improving the standard of Commonwealth Government counter services.

The Service Guide was designed primarily as a ready-reference j

manual for use by counter staff of Commonwealth Government offices

in answering inquiries about the availability of Commonwealth services

and benefits. The Guide will not attempt to give complete information

about services but will enable the inquirer to be directed to the

source from which specific or comprehensive information can be obtained.

Counter staff at particular offices, with the help of the Service Guide,

will now be able more satisfactorily to refer inquiries about services

provided by Commonwealth departments other than their own.

Mr McLeay said that the Service Guide, in the form of a loose-

leaf manual which would be updated four times a year, had been

distributed to Commonwealth public contact points around Australia at

which significant numbers of inquiries are received. It is expected

that non-Commonwealth organisations will find the Service Guide useful,

and copies are therefore also being made available for sale through

Australian Government Publishing Service Bookshops and Mail Order
