IMMEDIATE RELEASE ' FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 7 1979

VETERANS * AFFAIRS TO REPLACE COMPUTER

The Minister for Administrative Services, John McLeay,

in conjunction with the Minister for Veterans* Affairs,

Mr Evan Adermann announced today that subject to the

conclusion of satisfactory contractual arrangements

the AMDAHL Division of FACOM Australia Ltd would .

supply computing equipment to the Department of

Veterans* Affairs. . · · · · ■ . .

The successful tender which included the provision of.

support services and ancillary equipment was for the

supply of an AMDAHL V511 central-processing unit on a

rental basis for a period of about two years at an

approximate, cost of $1.7M. He said the new computer

would replace existing computers.

The need for assistance in the early conversion of the

Department of Veterans’ Affairs* existing applications

systems on to the new equipment was a significant factor

in the tender evaluation.

The Ministers said that during the rental period, .the

Department's long-term computing requirements would be

established and a further tender issued for equipment

to meet those needs. .
