PRESS RELEASE NO. 72

APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY CHIEF AUSTRALIAN ELECTORAL OFFICER

The Minister for Administrative Services,

Senator the Right Honourable R.G. Withers, announced today

that Mr Andrejs Cirulis has been appointed as the Deputy

Chief Australian Electoral Officer.

Mr Cirulis, whose appointment dates from

1 August 1978, is at present the Senior Assistant Secretary

in charge of the Constitutional and Electoral Branch in the

Advisings Division of the Attorney-General* 1s Department. A

Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and

the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory, .

Mr Cirulis has been with the Attorney-General's Department

since 1958. He is a career Public Servant with extensive

experience in the law and particularly in electoral legislation.

He will take over the position of Deputy Chief Australian

Electoral Officer from Mr I.D. Ernerton who earlier this year

was appointed to a position of Deputy Commonwealth Ombudsman.
