PRIME MINISTER'S MESSAGE TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE UN SPECIAL COMMITTEE AGAINST APARTHEID ON THE OCCASION OF THE ANNUAL SPECIAL MEETING FOR THE COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION AT UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS.·. NEW YORK

The practice of apartheid and racial bigotry continues to

offend human decency and human dignity. Racism is an affront

to all mankind.

The arrogant cruelty and stupidity of those who practice

discrimination or pretend to racial superiority can only be

condemned„ .

We see this annual commemoration as the occasion 'to recommit

the world, community to enhancing the equality of man and to

opposing racism in all its forms by all responsible means that

are available. In the' pursuit of the equality of man with man

there can be no ultimate compromise.

The Government and people of Australia declare their continuing

abhorrence of racism wherever it occurs and will work at all

times through every reasonable measure open to them to achieve

equality and self-esteem for all men and women.
