Australian Unesco Seminar on Urban Management Processes

Adelaide, 2 2 -2 5 August 1977

Departmental 4 3 19 August 1 9 7 7

The Australian National Commission for Unesco1s seminar on Urban Management Processes will be opened at 12 noon, Monday 22 August at the Haywood Inservice Education Centre, Bridgewater by the Hon H R Hudson MP, South Australian Minister for Planning.

The seminar is organised by a sub-committee of the Australian Unesco Committee for the Social and Human Sciences under the chairmaiship of Professor A J Rose of the School of Earth Sciences, Macquarie University. ' ·· '

Related to a previous Unesco seminar on New Towns in Isolated Settings held at Kambalda, Vie stern Australia in August 1973, the seminar theme is in line with Unesco1s international program on the management of human settlements.

The seminar, will seek to examine where the problems lie in day to day systems of urban management and will look at new structures which are developing at both local and state levels. Consideration will be given to the overall philosophy of urban management in Australia, in terms of issues identified by Professor Mai Logan and,Dr John Paterson in reviewing and summarising state papers.

Experts in each State have been asked to prepare a review of the situation in their State over the last 10 years, within the following framework:

1. What was the situation 10 years ago?

2. What developments have occurred since then?

3. Where is the existing planning process leading?

The seminar will also consider other issues influencing management structures including the supply of, and demand for, resources to urban development, initiation of structural change, and the question of intergovernmental

relations.
