THE LIBERAL PARTY OF . AUSTRALIA n e w s- r e l e a s e FEDERAL SECRETARIAT ' . . ·

" STATEMENT FROM MR. D. CONNOLLY, MP’ , MEMBER FOR BRADFIELD- NSW

36 RESERVISTS LOSE ’ CHUTE TRAINING

FOURTEEN MEMBERS OF THE ARMY RESERVE’ S 1ST COMMANDO C0„ IN SYDNEY WERE INFORMED, AT ONE DAY’ S NOTICE, THAT THEIR PARACHUTE TRAINING. COURSE FROM JUNE 25 TO JULY 25 HAD BEEN CANCELLED, OSTENSIBLY

BECAUSE THE ARMY COULD NOT AFFORD TO SEND THEM FROM SYDNEY TO THE R . A . A . F . BASE AT WILLIAMTOWN, JUST NORTH OF .NEWCASTLE.

ONLY FOUR WILL GO. S IM IL A R L Y , 22 MEMBERS OF THE 2ND COMMANDO CO. IN MELBOURNE, WHO WERE SUPPOSED TO ATTEND THE COURSE, W ILL NOT BE DOING SO. ,

THIS WAS STATED TODAY BY MR. DAVID CONNOLLY, SECRETARY OF THE FEDERAL OPPOSITION’ S DEFENCE AND FOREIGN POLICY COMM I TEE, A FORMER MEMBER OF THE 1ST COMMANDO CO ., AND LIBERAL M .P . FOR BRADFIELD ( N . S . W . ) · . -

HE SAID THE N .S .W . MEN WERE EVEN PREPARED TO MAKE PRIVATE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS. - '

’ ’ THESE CANCELLATIONS ARE EXAMPLES OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’ S POLICY OF S T IF L IN G DEFENCE EXPENDITURE, WHICH IS DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE POOR MORALE IN ALL THE DEFENCE SERVICES, AND IN THE ARMY RESERVE UNITS (FORMERLY THE C . M . F . ) , ” HE S A ID .

’ ’ THEY ARE EVIDENCE OF HOW THE ARMY IS BEING FORCED TO CUT EXPENDITURE ON RESERVE UNITS TO THE BONE, BY DIVERTING THEIR FUNDS TO REGULAR ARMY COURSES, IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAINTAIN SOME SEMBLANCE OF MORALE IN THE REGULAR U N I T S . ·Î¤Î—Ε ARMY HAS ARRANGED FOR 3 9 REGULAR

ARMY MEN TO ATTEND THE COURSE” .

MR» CONNOLLY CALLED ON THE GOVERNMENT TO IMPLEMENT THE RECOMMENDATION IN THE MILLER REPORT - WHICH I T HAD COMMISSIONED - FOR REMOVAL OF THE D ISTIN CTION BETWEEN THE REGULAR ARMY AND THE RESERVE TO MAKE THE RESERVE MORE EFFECTIVE.

’ ’ THIS WOULD BE BETTER THAN PERSISTING WITH THE CHARADE OF AN ARMY RESERVE IN WHICH MANY UNITS ARE ONLY AT HALF OF THEIR AUTHORISED STRENGTH,” HE S A ID .

’ ’ RESERVE UNITS NEED TO FEEL THEY ARE RECEIVING EFFECTIVE TRAINING, NOT JUST WASTING THEIR TIME. TO ACHIEVE T H IS , THEY .MUST BE ABLE TO ATTEND SPECIALISED COURSES.”
