The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Malcolm Fraser, said today that he had appointed Mr Peter G. Cross, of Canberra, as his

Principal Private Secretary.

Mr Cross, aged 29, has a background in the diplomatic service and in the economic field. He will take over responsibility for Mr Fraser1s personal office in about three weeks.

Mr Cross is a West Australian, and graduated BA from the Perth university with a First Class Honours in politics and economics. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs, and

was with the Australian Embassy in Djakarta.

Since entering the business world last year, he has been working as a business and economic consultant.

Mr Cross is the third officer to be selected for the Leader

of the Opposition's professional staff. Mr Fraser has already appointed a Press Secretary (Mr David Barnett) and a Senior Adviser (Mr David Kemp).

The acting head of the Leader's personal staff, Mr Tony Eggleton, will become the Liberal Party's Federal Director after handing over to Mr Cross next month.
