JOINT STATEMENT BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION, MR. MALCOLM FRASER, AND THE LEADER OF THE COUNTRY PARTY, MR. J.D. ANTHONY

The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, and the Leader . of the Country Party, Mr. J.D. Anthony, held discussions in Melbourne today. . .

The private talks were followed by a meeting of the Liberal and Country Party Leadership including the.Parties' Leaders in the Senate. . .

In a joint statement following the talks, Mr. Fraser and Mr. Anthony said a full understanding had been reached on all areas of co-operation between the two parties. .

Everything possible would be done to strengthen still further the close ties between the two opposition parties.

. They were determined to work even more closely together in the future to demonstrate their credibility as the alternative government and to defeat the Whitlam government. .

There would continue to be a.joint Shadow Cabinet and Ministry and joint Parliamentary Committees. ยทยท. .

The two parties would also continue to work together in the production of joint policies. .

With a philosophy of opportunity, for all Australians and deep and practical concern for those in need, the two parties would unite in preparing for a stable and progressive government to replace the Whitlam brand of government.

Those attending this afternoon's meeting in addition to the two Party leaders were the Liberal Deputy Leader, Mr. P. Lynch, the Liberal Senate Leader, Senator R. Withers, and the Senate . Deputy Leader, Senator I. Greenwood. ~

At Mr. Fraser's invitation the meeting was also attended by the senior Liberal senator for New South Wales, Senator R. Cotton.

The Country Party leadership team comprised the Deputy Leader, Mr. I. Sinclair, the Country Party Leader in the Senate, Senator T. Drake-Brockman, with Mr. P. Nixon.
