APPOINTMENT OF AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER TO SRI L A M A

. . AND AMBASSADOR TO THE REPUBLIC OF MALDIVES

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, ' Senator Don Willesee, today announced the appointment of Mr A.HA Borthwick, a senior officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and at present Ambassador to the Kingdom of Laos, as High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Ambassador to the Republic of Maldives,

Mr Borthwick, aged. 56, will take up his appointment ■ in Colombo in August, succeeding Mr IT. Marshall, who has been High Commissioner in Sri Lanka since 1972 and Ambassador to the Republic of Maldives since 1974. Mr Marshall will take up

another assignment overseas.

Senator Willesee said that he was pleased to be able to take this opportunity to reaffirm the importance Australia attached to its relations with Sri Lanka and the Republic of Maldives. The relationship with. Sri Lanka had. been underlined,

he recalled, by the visit of the Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam., to that country in December 1974.

Mr Borthwick was born in Warragul, Victoria, and graduated in Arts from the University of Melbourne. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1943 and has served previously in Colombo■as well as in Wellington, Singapore and Bangkok. He has been Ambassador in Vientiane, Laos, since

1972. ·

Mr Borthwick is married with nine children.
