Media Statement, Senator D. Willesee, 1 January 1975 The Foreign Minister, Senator Don Willesee, announced an immediate Australian contribution of $25,000 to Pakistan to help provide relief to people who had suf­ fered as a result of the earthquake disaster in northern Pakistan.

Reports from Islamabad confirmed that Pakistan had suffered a major catas­ trophe and that close to 5,000 people had died as a result df the earthquake. Senator Willesee hoped that Australia’s prompt contribution, which would be in a form to be decided after consultation with the Pakistani authorities, would provide relief to the many people who had been made homeless by the disaster.
