Minister for Education

Ministerial No. 35 11 March 1975.

The Minister for Education, Mr. Kim Beazley, announced

today he had asked the Interim ACT Schools Authority to set up a

working group to help draw up new plans for the redevelopment of

Dickson High School as a secondary college.

Mr. Beazley said, "I certainly do not believe the

original plan of conversion should proceed. It would undoubtedly

be disruptive.

"I have taken into consideration the levels of expenditure

required to meet the future needs of education in the ACT and

throughout Australia and the priorities that had to be established. · ' · '

"But I have reached the conclusion that I cannot accept

the recommendation to construct an entirely new college.

"It is still possible to convert Dickson High School into

a place suitable as a secondary college without serious disruption

and to have a secondary college offering its special services

available within a reasonable time."

Mr. Beazley said he had given the matter detailed

consideration and had talked to interested parties, including

representatives of the Commonwealth Teachers Federation and the

College Watching Committee.

A working group would be established by the Interim ACT

Schools Authority to advise on the drawing up of new plans.
