Reduced waiting lines for government houses and flats

The Minister for the Capital Territory, Mr Gordon Bryant, said

today the stepping up of government housing construction and the

purchase of flats from builders had significantly reduced waiting

times for government houses and flats. '

He said that for the first time since 1972 the waiting time

for 3 bedroom houses was less than 3 years. It was 41 months in

April last year.

The waiting time for family flats was now only 28 months, :

compared with 38 months in M a y ,1973.

A large turn-off of houses and flats was expected in the next .

few weeks and waiting times would be reduced further. ;

The waiting time for 2 bedroom flats could soon fall to 2

years from the present 28 months.

Mr Bryant said some applicants with,small families already . · , ;

on the waiting list and in urgent need of accommodation might

choose flats instead of houses. They could arrange this at the : .

enquiry counter of the Housing Operations Branch, 5th Floor,

Qantas House, London Circuit, Canberra City or by telephoning .

Mr Bryant said he expected the completion of stage three

of the Burnie Court bachelor flats within the next 2 months.

This would provide 74 more bedsitting-room flats and reduce . , ·

considerably the waiting time for bachelor accommodation.
