The Minister for Administrative Services, Senator R.G. Withers,

today announced that the Government had decided to take no action on

a proposed accelerated office accommodation programme. .

This programme had been originated by the previous Government last

It envisaged the construction by private developers of office

accommodation at selected centres for leasing to the Commonwealth.

A number of developers had registered interest in the proposal.

Senator Withers said that since coming to office the Government had

reviewed the proposal in the light of its overall economic assessments.

It had taken into account the general restraints on Government spending.

Considerable additional costs could be involved in transferring public

servants to new locations at rents higher than those available in the

central business districts of Sydney and Melbourne. Furniture and

fitting costs would add to this expense. . :

Senator Withers said the Government appreciated the interest shown by

individual developers in specific proposals. .

However the Government's prospective accommodation requirements would

be reassessed in the light of the overall review of Government prioritie

and programmes.

No further action would be taken until that review was completed.
