The Federal Minister for Health, Dr. D. N . Everingham, tonight announced plans to build a central health laboratory for the A.C.T. on the Woden Valley Hospital site.

The announcement follows recommendations from the A.C.T. Hospital Advisory Committee that pathology services in the A.C.T. should be integrated.

Dr. Everingham said that the laboratory will have close links with the Woden Hospital, a major public hospital..

"As well the location will ensure a reduction in costs, assist in the teaching role of the laboratories and in the recruitment of professional staff."

But he said that the establishment of the laboratory, which is planned to be completed in 1976, will not eliminate the need for limited pathology laboratories in "individual hospitals for certain emergency work.

The central laboratory will be administered by the proposed A.C.T. statutory health authority.

"This is in line with the Labor Government's policy of providing both public and private patients with free diagnostic services," Dr. Everingham added.
