PRESS STATEMENT BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IN THE SENATE, SENATOR R. G. WITHERS, CONCERNING - THE NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTIONS

TL /?£>

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate,

Senator R. G. Withers, today warmly congratulated the Premier

of New South Wales, Sir Robert Askin, on his victory at

yesterday's New South Wales State election.

‘ "The result must be very pleasing for Sir Robert

and his Government as it is for Liberal and Country Party

supporters everywhere.

"The result not only reflects confidence in

Sir Robert's Government, but it must also reflect the New

South Wales electors' dissatisfaction with the performance of

our Caucus-dominated Federal Labor Government.

"It is another chapter in the now long list of

defeats suffered by the Labor Party since the Federal elections

last year. The Prime Minister may believe he is the greatest,

but the people of New South Wales are obviously not convinced

of his infallibility."

Senator Withers said that on Saturday's voting

trends, the Liberal/Country Party should be able to return its

full team of three Senators at next year's Senate election.
